I chose to do an updated statement using Magritte’s “Son of Man”. This surrealist self portrait can easily be interpreted as the visible / invisible nature of ourselves, our personality, or what we chose to show or not show the public. I find direct alignment in this narrative to our modern use of electronic devices to remain distant, or invisible, while remaining in contact, giving us a more calculated depiction of how we would like to be perceived, or our “self portrait” (and of course I used a "green apple").
I also wanted to tackle a more contemporary version of Degas' "The Interior", again using electronic devices, this time to demonstrate a tension or lack of communication in the relationship. I enjoyed creating these images, however I felt "Son of Man" was a stronger piece.

Amanda, I just love love the idea of the first image. I was looking at that artwork when I was trying to come up with an idea and I couldn't think of how to mail it contemporary and you NAILED it. It is so clever and speaks so loudly! Also, you did a great job of executing it. I love that the wardrobe speaks directly to the original and we even have the green of the apple, but it is so starkly different from the original that it works wonderfully. It really does tell a narrative and in a really creative way.
The first photo is brilliant. Immediately recognizable and with a funny modern twist on it. Well composed photos as well.
both of these narrative photos are fantastic and both undoubtedly portray what you wanted. you made a good point and your new age recreations are brilliant. well done! not to mention the lighting and placement in both photos is perfect
Amanda,
I knew the exact painting you were trying to replicate once I saw the man in the hat and a green "apple" in front of his face. This photo has a modern spin to the original work and it was executed very well. Great job!
